Pregnancy care (antenatal and postnatal) in Dubai

Care before, during and after pregnancy.

Dr. Surekha Boreddy Veera

Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

Where in Dubai

Dr. Surekha Boreddy Veera provides pregnancy care at NMC Specialty Hospital in Al Nahda, Dubai, where she also delivers babies. Having check-ups and the birth at the same hospital means your records are in one place. Check your maternity cover early: many plans have waiting periods and limits for antenatal visits, scans and delivery.

What is pregnancy care (antenatal and postnatal)?

Pregnancy care covers three stages. Preconception care helps you prepare, with advice on folic acid, vaccines, weight and any long-term conditions. Antenatal care is the series of check-ups during pregnancy. At each visit your blood pressure and urine are checked, the baby's growth is measured, and you can ask questions. Key scans are usually offered at around 11 to 14 weeks and 18 to 21 weeks. Blood tests check your blood group, iron, sugar and infections. Postnatal care follows the birth. It checks how you are healing, how you are feeling and how feeding is going, and ends with a check at about six weeks.

Who it can help

  • Women planning a pregnancy who want advice first.
  • Women who have just had a positive pregnancy test.
  • Women moving their care to a new doctor during pregnancy.
  • New mothers who need postnatal checks after the birth.

What to expect

  1. Before pregnancy

Start folic acid at least three months before trying. A preconception visit reviews your health, medicines and vaccines.

  2. First visit

Ideally before 10 weeks. Your history, blood tests, and a plan for the visits and scans ahead.

  3. Scans and tests

A dating scan at around 11 to 14 weeks and an anomaly scan at around 18 to 21 weeks, with screening tests offered.

  4. Regular check-ups

Visits become more frequent later in pregnancy. Blood pressure, urine and the baby's growth are checked each time.

  5. Birth planning

From about 36 weeks, you discuss the baby's position, your birth preferences and pain relief.

  6. After the birth

Checks on healing, bleeding, mood and feeding, and a postnatal check at about six weeks, including contraception.

Recovery, in general terms

Every patient is different. These are typical milestones, not a promise; your own plan comes from your consultation.

  • Bleeding after birth usually lasts several weeks and slowly gets lighter.
  • Gentle walking helps from the first days. Pelvic floor exercises can start soon after the birth.
  • Low mood in the first two weeks is common. Feelings that last longer, or are severe, need help.
  • The six-week postnatal check reviews your recovery, mood and contraception.

When to book a visit

Book your first pregnancy visit as soon as you know you are pregnant, ideally before 10 weeks. Seek urgent care for bleeding, severe pain, fluid leaking, severe headache, or fewer baby movements.

Questions patients ask

Does my Dubai insurance cover pregnancy care?

Many Dubai plans include maternity cover, but limits, co-payments and waiting periods differ. Ask your insurer what is covered for visits, scans and delivery, and check with the hospital before your first visit.

When should I see a doctor after a positive pregnancy test?

Book a visit soon, ideally so you are seen before 10 weeks. Start folic acid straight away if you have not already. Come sooner if you have pain or bleeding.

How many antenatal visits will I have?

A first pregnancy usually has around ten visits, and later pregnancies around seven. You may have more if your pregnancy needs closer care.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Your Emirates ID, insurance card, any earlier pregnancy records, scan reports, and a list of your medicines. Note the first day of your last period.

Can my husband come to the appointments?

Partners are usually welcome at visits and scans. Hospital rules can vary, so check with the hospital before your appointment.
