Caesarean section (C-section) in Dubai

Birth through a cut in the tummy and womb.

Dr. Surekha Boreddy Veera

Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

Where in Dubai

Dr. Surekha Boreddy Veera performs caesarean births at NMC Specialty Hospital in Al Nahda, Dubai. For a planned caesarean, the date is fixed in advance, so you can arrange insurance approval, family help and work leave before the day. You will not be able to drive for a few weeks afterwards, so plan lifts to your follow-up visits.

What is caesarean section (C-section)?

A caesarean section is an operation to deliver a baby through a cut in the tummy and womb. The cut is usually made across the lower tummy, just below the bikini line. A planned (elective) caesarean is arranged in advance, often from 39 weeks. Reasons include a baby lying bottom first, a low-lying placenta, some twin pregnancies, or more than one earlier caesarean. An emergency caesarean is done when problems arise in pregnancy or labour, such as labour not progressing or the baby showing signs of distress. Most caesareans are done under a spinal anaesthetic, so you are awake but feel no pain. The operation usually takes 40 to 50 minutes.

Who it can help

  • A baby lying bottom first or sideways near the due date.
  • A placenta covering the cervix, or other conditions that make labour unwise.
  • Two or more earlier caesareans, or some types of earlier surgery on the womb.
  • Some twin pregnancies, and some high-risk pregnancies.
  • Women who ask for a caesarean, after a full discussion of benefits and risks.

How Dr. Surekha approaches it

Dr. Surekha Boreddy Veera lists elective and emergency caesarean sections on her CV. At Burjeel Specialty Hospital in Sharjah, from 2024 to 2025, her work included high-risk caesarean sections. She now delivers babies at NMC Specialty Hospital, Al Nahda. If a caesarean is advised, she explains the reason and what the day will involve, and if you are asking for one, she discusses the benefits and risks with you.

What to expect

  1. Deciding

You discuss why a caesarean is advised or wanted, the risks, and the effect on future pregnancies.

  2. Before the day

Blood tests, an anaesthetic check, and advice on when to stop eating and drinking.

  3. Anaesthetic

Usually a spinal anaesthetic, so you are awake and numb from the chest down. A screen blocks your view.

  4. The birth

The baby is usually born within the first few minutes. Closing the wounds takes longer.

  5. In hospital

You are helped to get up and walk within hours. Most women go home within one to two days, sometimes longer.

Recovery, in general terms

Every patient is different. These are typical milestones, not a promise; your own plan comes from your consultation.

  • Some wound pain is normal for the first days, and for some women it lasts several weeks.
  • Do not lift anything heavier than your baby for about six weeks.
  • No driving for a few weeks, until you can do an emergency stop without pain.
  • Bleeding after birth lasts several weeks, as after a vaginal birth.
  • A postnatal check at about six weeks reviews your healing.

Risks to know about

  • Wound infection or infection of the womb lining.
  • Heavy bleeding, which can occasionally need a blood transfusion.
  • Blood clots in the legs or lungs. You may be given injections to lower this risk.
  • Rarely, injury to the bladder or bowel.
  • A higher chance of placenta problems in future pregnancies.

When to book a visit

Discuss your birth plan with your doctor in the third trimester, especially if you had a caesarean before. After a caesarean, seek help the same day for fever, a red or leaking wound, heavy bleeding, or a painful swollen calf.

Questions patients ask

Does insurance in Dubai cover a caesarean?

Most maternity plans cover a caesarean that is medically needed. Cover for a caesarean by request differs between plans. Check with your insurer and the hospital well before your due date.

How many caesareans can I have?

There is no fixed number. Each caesarean raises the chance of problems in later pregnancies, such as the placenta growing into the scar. Your history and plans for more children guide the advice.

Can I breastfeed after a caesarean?

Yes. You can usually hold your baby skin to skin and start feeding soon after the birth. Staff can help you find comfortable positions around the wound.

When can I have another baby after a caesarean?

Many doctors advise waiting about 18 months after the birth before getting pregnant again, so the scar can heal well. Talk about your own plans at your postnatal check.
