Where in Dubai
Dr. Surekha Boreddy Veera offers hysteroscopy assessment at NMC Specialty Hospital in Al Nahda, Dubai. Many women in Dubai first hear about hysteroscopy after a scan shows a polyp or a thick womb lining. Bring that scan report to your consultation. If you work long shifts, ask about timing: a short clinic procedure often needs only the rest of the day off.
What is hysteroscopy?
A hysteroscopy lets a doctor look inside the womb. A thin telescope with a light and camera, called a hysteroscope, is passed through the vagina and cervix. No cuts are made. Fluid gently opens the womb so the lining shows clearly on a screen. A diagnostic hysteroscopy finds the cause of problems such as unusual bleeding. An operative hysteroscopy treats them in the same sitting. It can remove polyps, fibroids inside the womb, scar tissue or a lost coil, and take tissue samples. It usually takes 10 to 15 minutes, longer if something is removed. It can be done in a clinic with or without local anaesthetic, or under a general anaesthetic.
Who it can help
- Heavy, irregular or unusual bleeding, including bleeding between periods or after sex.
- Any bleeding after the menopause.
- Polyps or fibroids seen inside the womb on a scan.
- Repeated miscarriages or difficulty getting pregnant, to check the shape of the womb.
- A coil that cannot be found or removed in the usual way.
How Dr. Surekha approaches it
Dr. Surekha Boreddy Veera lists all hysteroscopic procedures and diagnostic and therapeutic hystero-laparoscopy among her skills. That means she can both look inside the womb and treat common findings, such as polyps, in one procedure. Before booking, she explains whether a clinic procedure or one under anaesthetic suits you, and what pain relief is available.
What to expect
Consultation
She asks about your bleeding or fertility concerns, examines you and reviews your ultrasound scan.
Planning
You agree whether to have it awake with pain relief or asleep. A pregnancy test is usually done on the day.
Before you come
Taking ibuprofen or paracetamol about an hour before can help, if these suit you. Use contraception or avoid sex between your period and the test.
The procedure
The hysteroscope is passed gently into the womb. You can usually watch on the screen if you are awake.
Results
Some findings are explained straight away. Tissue sent to the laboratory comes back in a week or two.
Recovery, in general terms
Every patient is different. These are typical milestones, not a promise; your own plan comes from your consultation.
- Period-like cramps for a day or two are normal.
- Light bleeding or spotting for up to a week. Use pads, not tampons.
- Most women return to normal activities the next day.
- After a general anaesthetic, someone needs to take you home and stay with you that night.
Risks to know about
- Pain during the procedure. You can ask to stop at any time.
- Infection, which shows as smelly discharge, fever or worsening pain.
- Heavy bleeding, which is uncommon.
- Rarely, a small tear in the wall of the womb, which may need treatment.
When to book a visit
Book a visit for unusual bleeding between periods, after sex or after the menopause. After a hysteroscopy, seek help for bleeding that gets worse, fever, smelly discharge or pain that painkillers do not ease.

Questions patients ask
Do I need insurance approval for a hysteroscopy in Dubai?
Often, yes. Many insurers need pre-approval, especially for an operative hysteroscopy or one under general anaesthetic. The hospital can usually request it after your consultation.
Does a hysteroscopy hurt?
Many women feel cramps like period pain. For some it is more painful. You can ask for pain relief, local anaesthetic or a general anaesthetic. Talk about your worries before the day.
Can I have a hysteroscopy during my period?
It is usually planned after your period has finished, because blood makes the view harder. If you bleed often or unpredictably, it can still go ahead.
How soon will I know the result?
What the camera shows is often explained to you on the same day. Laboratory results on any tissue taken usually take one to two weeks.
