Where in Dubai
Ovarian cysts are often found by chance on a scan done for something else. If that has happened to you in Dubai, Dr. Surekha Boreddy Veera can review the report at NMC Specialty Hospital in Al Nahda. Bring the scan report and images, and the date of your last period, because the timing in your cycle changes how a cyst is read. A repeat scan is often the next step.
What is ovarian cyst removal?
An ovarian cyst is a sac filled with fluid that forms on an ovary. Most cysts are harmless. Many form as part of the monthly cycle and go away on their own within a few months. Others, such as dermoid cysts or endometriosis cysts, stay or grow. Small cysts often cause no symptoms. Larger ones can cause pelvic pain, bloating, pain during sex or a need to pass urine often. A cyst can sometimes burst or twist the ovary, which causes sudden severe pain and needs urgent care. Surgery removes the cyst and keeps the ovary where possible (cystectomy). Keyhole surgery is preferred, because it usually means less pain and a quicker recovery.
Who it can help
- A cyst that is large, growing, or still there on a repeat scan.
- A cyst that causes pain, bloating or pressure.
- Dermoid cysts and endometriosis cysts, which do not go away on their own.
- A cyst with features on the scan or blood tests that need a closer look.
- Women after the menopause with a new cyst.
How Dr. Surekha approaches it
Dr. Surekha Boreddy Veera lists laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy and open ovarian cystectomy among her skills, and she performs obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound. She holds a Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopy (2021). Many cysts only need watching. When surgery is advised, she explains how she plans to protect the healthy ovary, especially if you hope to have children.
What to expect
Consultation
She asks about your symptoms and cycle, and examines you.
Ultrasound and blood tests
A scan shows the size and type of the cyst. A blood test may be added in some cases.
Watch or treat
Simple cysts are often rechecked with a scan after a few weeks or months. Persistent or troublesome cysts are removed.
The operation
Keyhole surgery is done under a general anaesthetic. The cyst is sent to the laboratory for testing.
Results
You review the laboratory report at follow-up and discuss whether anything more is needed.
Recovery, in general terms
Every patient is different. These are typical milestones, not a promise; your own plan comes from your consultation.
- After keyhole surgery, most women go home the same day or the next day.
- Tummy pain improves over the first few days; shoulder-tip pain from the gas settles in a day or two.
- Many women return to desk work within about two weeks.
- Full recovery takes longer after open surgery, and can be up to 12 weeks after larger operations.
Risks to know about
- Bleeding, infection or blood clots.
- Uncommon injury to the bowel, bladder or blood vessels.
- Some cysts come back, especially endometriosis cysts.
- Occasionally the whole ovary needs to be removed. This is discussed with you before surgery.
When to book a visit
Book a visit for ongoing pelvic pain, bloating, or a cyst found on a scan. Go to an emergency department straight away for sudden severe pelvic pain, especially with vomiting, fever or feeling faint.

Questions patients ask
I was told I have a cyst. How soon should I be seen?
If you have no pain, a routine appointment is fine. If you have sudden severe pain, vomiting or fever, go to an emergency department straight away rather than waiting for a clinic visit.
Will removing a cyst affect my fertility?
Removing the cyst and keeping the ovary usually protects fertility. You can still get pregnant with one healthy ovary. If you are planning a family, say so at the consultation so it shapes the plan.
Does every ovarian cyst need surgery?
No. Most cysts in women who still have periods are harmless and disappear on their own. A repeat scan is often all that is needed.
Is an ovarian cyst a sign of cancer?
Most ovarian cysts are not cancer. A small number need further tests because of how they look on a scan, or because of age. Tissue removed at surgery is checked in a laboratory.
