Where in Dubai

Many women in Dubai live with period pain for years before anyone suggests endometriosis. Dr. Surekha Boreddy Veera sees women with suspected or known endometriosis at NMC Specialty Hospital in Al Nahda, Dubai. Keep a simple pain diary for one or two cycles before your visit. Note the days, how bad the pain is, and what helps. It makes the first consultation much more useful.

What is endometriosis treatment and surgery?

Endometriosis is a long-term condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other places, such as on the ovaries, the tubes or the lining of the pelvis. This tissue reacts to monthly hormones. It can bleed and cause inflammation and scar tissue. Common signs are painful periods, pelvic pain, pain during or after sex, pain when passing urine or opening the bowels during a period, and difficulty getting pregnant. It affects around 1 in 10 women of reproductive age. Diagnosis often takes years, because the pain is mistaken for normal period pain. Treatment aims to ease pain and protect fertility. It may include painkillers, hormone treatment, or keyhole surgery to remove the patches and cysts.

Common signs

  • Period pain that stops you working, studying or sleeping, even with painkillers.
  • Pelvic pain between periods, or pain during sex.
  • Bowel or bladder pain that gets worse during your period.
  • Difficulty getting pregnant, especially with painful periods.
  • An ovarian cyst that looks like an endometrioma (chocolate cyst) on a scan.

How Dr. Surekha approaches it

Dr. Surekha Boreddy Veera lists laparoscopic endometriosis removal surgery, ovarian cystectomy and release of adhesions among her skills, and holds a Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopy (2021). In 2017 she published a research article on endometriosis in abdominal surgical scar tissue. Treatment depends on your pain, your scans and whether you plan a pregnancy. She explains the medical and surgical options so you can choose.

What to expect

  1. Consultation

She asks about your pain, your cycle and your pregnancy plans, and examines you.

  2. Scans

An ultrasound scan can show endometriosis cysts and some deeper disease. A normal scan does not rule endometriosis out.

  3. First treatment

Painkillers and hormone treatment are often tried first. They can ease symptoms but do not remove the tissue.

  4. Keyhole surgery

If needed, a laparoscopy confirms the diagnosis and removes or destroys the patches, cysts and scar tissue in the same operation.

  5. Follow-up

You review the findings and the laboratory report, and plan long-term care, including fertility if that matters to you.

Getting better

Every patient is different. These are typical milestones, not a promise; your own plan comes from your consultation.

  • Most women go home the same day or the next day after a laparoscopy.
  • Shoulder-tip pain from the surgical gas is common for a day or two.
  • Light activity within a week; a typical return to work is one to three weeks, longer after extensive surgery.
  • Hormone treatment may be advised afterwards to lower the chance of symptoms coming back.

Risks to know about

  • Endometriosis can come back after surgery, and some women need more treatment later.
  • Bleeding, infection or blood clots, as with any operation.
  • Uncommon injury to the bowel, bladder or ureters, which is more likely when disease is deep.

When to book a visit

Book a visit if period pain disrupts your life, or if you have pelvic pain, painful sex or trouble getting pregnant. Seek urgent care for sudden severe pelvic pain, fever, or fainting.

Questions patients ask

Is endometriosis surgery covered by insurance in Dubai?

Many plans cover a laparoscopy for endometriosis when it is medically needed, usually with pre-approval. Hormone medicines may fall under different limits. Check your plan and ask the hospital to confirm.

Can endometriosis be cured?

Endometriosis is a long-term condition, but treatment can control symptoms well for many women. Surgery removes visible disease, and hormone treatment can help keep symptoms down.

Can I get pregnant with endometriosis?

Many women with endometriosis get pregnant naturally. Some need help. Surgery to remove endometriosis may improve the chances for some women, and fertility treatment is another route.

What is scar endometriosis?

It is endometriosis that grows in the scar of an earlier operation, such as a caesarean. It often shows as a painful lump in the scar that gets worse around periods. Dr. Surekha Boreddy Veera published research on this in 2017.
