Dr. Surekha Boreddy Veera

Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

Where in Dubai

Dr. Surekha Boreddy Veera delivers babies at NMC Specialty Hospital in Al Nahda, Dubai. Plan your route to the hospital early, including at rush hour, and keep a bag ready from about 36 weeks with your Emirates ID and insurance card. Many families in the UAE have relatives visiting to help after the birth, so plan who will support you at home in the first weeks.

What is normal (vaginal) delivery?

A normal delivery means giving birth through the vagina. Labour has three stages. In the first stage, contractions open the cervix. This early part can take many hours, especially in a first labour. In the second stage, the cervix is fully open and you push the baby out. In the third stage, the placenta is delivered. Most healthy women with a straightforward pregnancy can plan a vaginal birth. Pain relief options, including an epidural, are discussed before labour. Sometimes help is needed, such as a ventouse (suction cup) or forceps, or a caesarean if labour does not progress or the baby shows signs of distress.

Who it can help

  • Women with a healthy pregnancy and the baby lying head down.
  • Women who want to plan a vaginal birth and learn what to expect.
  • Women whose labour may need to be started (induced), for example after the due date.
  • Women with some risk factors, after a discussion of their own situation.

How Dr. Surekha approaches it

Dr. Surekha Boreddy Veera's CV lists normal vaginal deliveries and all kinds of complicated vaginal deliveries, along with antenatal and postpartum care. She completed DNB training in obstetrics and gynaecology in 2017. She delivers babies at NMC Specialty Hospital, Al Nahda. Your birth preferences are discussed in pregnancy, together with what happens if labour needs help.

What to expect

  1. Planning in pregnancy

From about 36 weeks you talk through your birth preferences, pain relief and when to come in.

  2. When labour starts

Call the hospital when contractions are regular and strong, your waters break, or you have bleeding or worries.

  3. First stage

Your contractions, blood pressure and the baby's heartbeat are monitored. You can move around and change position.

  4. Birth

When the cervix is fully open, you push with your contractions. A small cut (episiotomy) is made only if needed.

  5. Straight after

Skin-to-skin contact with your baby, delivery of the placenta, and any stitches if you have a tear.

Recovery, in general terms

Every patient is different. These are typical milestones, not a promise; your own plan comes from your consultation.

  • Many women go home within a day or two after a straightforward birth.
  • Soreness around the vagina and stitches usually eases over one to two weeks.
  • Bleeding after birth typically lasts several weeks, slowly getting lighter.
  • Start pelvic floor exercises gently in the first days. A postnatal check follows at about six weeks.

Risks to know about

  • Tears to the skin and muscle between the vagina and back passage, which may need stitches.
  • Needing help with the birth, such as a ventouse, forceps or an emergency caesarean.
  • Heavy bleeding after the birth, which is treated straight away.
  • Infection of stitches or the womb, shown by fever, worsening pain or smelly discharge.

When to book a visit

Plan your birth with your doctor from the third trimester, and ask any questions early. Go to the hospital straight away for heavy bleeding, waters breaking with green or brown fluid, constant severe pain, or fewer baby movements.

Questions patients ask

How much does a normal delivery cost in Dubai?

Costs depend on the hospital, your stay and your insurance cover, so no single figure fits everyone. Ask the hospital and your insurer during pregnancy what your plan covers for a normal delivery.

Can I have a normal delivery after a caesarean?

Many women can. It depends on why you had the caesarean, the type of cut on the womb, and how this pregnancy goes. It needs a careful discussion during pregnancy.

How long does labour last?

A first labour often lasts many hours, sometimes more than a day from the first contractions. Later labours are usually shorter. Every labour is different.

Can my husband be with me during labour?

Most hospitals welcome a birth partner in the delivery room. Rules can differ, so check with the hospital during pregnancy.
